Why We Use the Gonstead Adjusting Technique

Find the misalignment, accept it where you find it, correct it and leave it alone.”

C.S. Gonstead

The results that Gonstead practitioners are famous for begin with one of the most thorough assessments in chiropractic.

We use five key touch points to understand your unique spinal pattern:

Visualization — I’ll study your posture, head carriage, how you move, turn, bend and walk. This helps direct the other aspects of our assessment.

Instrumentation — Our Nervoscope instrument will for scan for subtle temperature differences along your spine. This can accurately pinpoint areas of inflammation and nerve pressure.

Static Palpation — I’ll use my fingers and lightly feel along your spine. Using touch, I’ll detect any swelling, tenderness or muscles that are abnormally tight.

Motion Palpation — I’ll repeat the process while you turn and bend. This reveals how well each spinal segment moves. I’ll make a note of any fixations that I detect.

X-Ray Evaluation — Full-spine radiographs will be taken while standing in a weight-bearing position. This can reveal hidden pathologies, fractures, misalignments or conditions that might rule out chiropractic care.

Only after a complete analysis can I be sure if you’re a good candidate for chiropractic care. If you are, I’ll make specific recommendations. Our care plans are designed to produce the best results in the shortest amount of time.

The Genius of Clarence Gonstead

Nervoscope device

As you can see, great care is taken to ensure that your adjustments are specific, precise and targeted. It requires meticulous examination protocols and years of experience.

This adjusting protocol was the brainchild of Dr. Clarence S. Gonstead (1898-1978). He created the first logical and bio-mechanically sound system for practicing chiropractic.

Before he became a chiropractor, he was an engineer. He brought his understanding of stress, force, mechanics and function into his practice. His legendary success with difficult cases and reliance on empirical data was unusual for the time. It resulted in one of largest chiropractic practices in the world. His Mount Horeb, Wisconsin practice featured a cavernous reception room, an adjacent hotel and even an airport landing strip to receive patients from around the world.

With a gift of solving difficult mechanical problems, he developed new insights. He introduced the “foundation principle.” He demonstrated how the spine produces compensatory changes above or below the primary problem.

Patient Comfort Comes First

To adjust your lower spine and pelvis, we’ll have you lie on your side. Problem areas in your middle back are corrected as you assume a comfortable kneeling position. When you are seated, we can restore the integrity of your spine without twisting or rotating your neck.

The Gonstead Technique is acknowledged as one of the safest systems of assessing and caring for the spine.
